Cosmos satellite retires

Russian space 'sea reconaissance' system down to one satellite

Published: 5/21/1999

The Cosmos-2335 satellite, used for ‘sea reconnaissance", has been retired. This leaves only one satellite, the Cosmos-2347, left in the space-based Russian system of ‘sea reconnaissance" and target indication. The Cosmos-2347, which was launched on December 9th 1997, has one year left of its operational life, but so far no replacement of the satellite is planned and the military unit, which launches such satellites from Baikonur Cosmodrome, has been disbanded. Future launches, if they do take place, are to be from Plesetsk, in a move that has been planned for some time. However, given current budgetary constraints, it seems unlikely to be used in the near future.
