MiG-29M2 begins flight test programme

New aircraft developed largely to meet Malaysian requirement offers range and payload improvements over MiG-29K (221 words)
Published:
10/5/2001
On 26th September, the MiG-29M2 (MiG-29MRCA) made its first 50-minute flight with the test pilot reporting that the aircraft demonstrated similar handling characteristics to the MiG-29K.
Developed over the last year at RSK MiG's expense, the new prototype, derived from the two seat MiG-29KUB, has a better range and higher payload capability than the MiG-29K. It will be transported by An-124 to the LIMA 2001 International Aerospace Exhibition, which will take place from 9th-14th October in Langkawi, Malaysia. After the show, the prototype's flight test programme will continue.
The development of the aircraft has largely been driven by the requirements of the Malaysians for up to 15 aircraft to supplement the 16 MiG-29Ss (delivered in 1995) and two MiG-29UBs. There were also reports that MiG has offered an upgrade package to MRCA standard for the RMAF's existing MiG-29s.
The Malaysians have also been reported to have been looking at the larger 12-18 Su-30MKMs. A decision on which aircraft was expected during a visit on 11th September by the Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad to Moscow, but the visit was cancelled due to the tragedy in United States. The United States is also offering the F-18 Super Hornet to meet the Malaysian requirement.
