AI-222-25 engine moves towards production

New engine to be produced at Salyut and used as base unit for several derivatives (160 words)

Published: 10/3/2001

According to Eduard Bulavin, Chief Designer of ZKMB Progress (Zaporozhye), the design house has passed over the design and technical documentation for the AI-222-25 engine to Motor Sich and Salyut (Moscow) is already reported to have started to prepare for production. The engine will be used as the replacement power plant for the RD-35 (DV-2) engines on the Yak-130 and will be installed on the aircraft by the end of 2002. Bulavin says that the $1m AI-222-25 is intended to be the base unit for a number of derivatives, including the AI-222-UVT with vectoring capability, AI-222-25F with thrust increased to 4,200kg and the AI-222-25KFK with a short afterburner. There is also the AI-222-28 with increased thrust (2,800kg take-off thrust). The AI-222-25 is the development of the AI-22 engine planned as the power plant for the KAPO-built Tu-324 regional airliner, which is currently under development.
