Mi-17s for Pakistan

Russia sells 16 Mi-17s, overcoming historical precedent (95 words)

Published: 9/27/2001

Russia has signed an agreement for the sale of 16 Mi-17s to Pakistan according to Pakistan's Ambassador to Russia. The sale to Pakistan represents a new market for Russia, given that Pakistan has traditionally been ceded to Ukraine because of Russian sensitivity over relations with its major defence customer, India, to whom Russia has also supplied over 180 Mi8/Mi-17s. The most recent order for 40 Mi-17-1V worth $170m, occurred in June 2000, in part to replace aircraft lost in the conflict with Pakistan in Kashmir.
