Aeroflot management to meet with union

Compromise expected (188 words)

Published: 9/4/2001

Aeroflot has confirmed that, on 4th September, the first meeting will take place of the new committee to review problems between management and the maintenance and engineering trade union. The committee, made up of four members from each side, was established to avert a strike on 31st August, ahead of the company's EGM. It seems that the management is prepared to make concessions to the unions with the election imminent and with Valery Okulov, General Director, keen to garner the 15% of votes held by employees. Victor Kleshchenkov, the trade union's leader, has reported that the preliminary discussions with management have led him to believe that Aeroflot's management is ready to compromise. The union's main demand is for wage increases and Kleshchenkov has stated that the airline has additional revenues as a result of 30% price rises over the last six months and can therefore pay employees more. Kleshchenkov says he is optimistic that this problem will be solved in favour of the employees and that the trade union and management will this time be able to find a compromise.
