According to Mikhail Pogozhikh, spokesman for Krasnoyarsk Airlines (KrasAir), Krasnoyarsk Airport, which is controlled by the airline, has been recently assessed by both the Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) and the European aviation authorities for its suitability for servicing flights on the new cross polar routes and as to whether it meets ICAO standards. The airports at Irkutsk, Blagoveshchensk, Khabarovsk, Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky, Magadan, Yakutsk and Hatanga have also been assessed.
Pogozhikh said he was confident that the review would result in the airport being granted approval for transit flights on Polar 1,2,3 and 4 by the European authorities. Mikhail Chetverikov, Director of Krasnoyarsk Airport, agrees there is a strong chance that the airport will win approval for Polar-1 and Polar-2 as it is well located for these routes and benefits from favourable weather conditions, but he considers that Khabarovsk Airport is better sited for Polar-3 and Polar-4.
