Wilga plane goes down in mountainous terrain

Four fatalities, as light aircraft crashes (137 words)

Published: 8/23/2001

On 16th August, a Polish-manufactured Wilga aircraft crashed in Adygea (Russian South), killing four people on board. It was some time before the aircraft wreckage was found, owing to the tree-covered mountainous terrain. Rescue workers were alerted by tourists, who reported that they had seen the aircraft trying to land near Devil Mountain, but they could not say what had actually happened after that, nor whether anybody had survived. Rescue workers had to go on foot to the crash site, where they found the wreckage and four bodies. A special commission is now investigating the crash. According to preliminary reports, a strong wind, which can suddenly blow up in the area, could be enough to have a devastating effect on a small light aircraft.
