Moldova to sell remaining MiGs

Last batch of inherited fighters on the market (130 words)

Published: 8/8/2001

After a protracted period of debate, the Moldovan parliament has finally agreed to the sale of the six remaining MiG-29s owned by the country out of the 27 aircraft inherited from the break up of the Soviet Union. The sale follows the 1997 disposal of 21 aircraft to the USA for $80m, which caused considerable controversy within Moldova, as half of the funds disappeared and remain unaccounted for. According to Victor Gaiciuc, Moldovan Minister of Defence, the disposal of the MiGs is part of a sale of 350 “pieces of military equipment”. Gaicuic justified the disposals on the grounds that the country could no longer afford to operate the aircraft, which were overhauled last year in Belarus.
