PS-90A fails (144 words)
Published:
3/1/2001
An Il-96-300 operated by Domodedovo Airlines made an emergency landing at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport at 9:28 local time on 27th February.
According to the Department of Emergency Situations, one of the aircraft's four PS-90A engines failed on the final approach. The aircraft landed safely. The cause of the engine failure is under investigation.
In the recent debate over reliability of the PS-90A (which has been attacked by Aeroflot and more recently by the GSGA), Domodedovo operation of the Il-96-300 has been held up as a good example of successful operation. The outcome of this investigation may add further weight to Aeroflot's concerns over the Il-96-300, described within Aeroflot maintenance circles as one of the “best aircraft in the world with three engines”; an obvious reference to the time that engines spend off the wing.
