Domestic passenger numbers up by 19.4% according to prelinary figures (420 words)
Published:
1/22/2001
During 2000, the carrier increased its passenger traffic, (according to preliminary
data) by 10.5% over 1999, taking it to 5,104,00 passengers. Both domestic and
international routes saw increases in terms of passengers and passenger revenue
kilometres. Although growth on international routes was lower than domestic
(7.8% vs. 19.4%). The figures are howeever, substantially better than the 1%
recorded for the industry as a whole in 2000 according to the Ministry of Transport.
Nickolai Kuznetsov, Aeroflot's Finance Director, said that despite the high
growth in traffic, seat load factors on domestic routes fell, in 2000, by 2%
on domestic routes. This was however, offset by a 13.2% increase on its international
routes, making an overall seat load factor increase of 10.6%; reflecting the
high proportion of international passengers in the Aeroflot mix.
The reason for the falls in domestic load factors appears attributable to:
· Aeroflot's commencement of a number of new routes that are still building
passenger numbers.
· In 2000, Aeroflot has increased ticket prices on domestic routes (negatively
affecting price sensitive passengers); average ticket price on domestic routes
being increased 38% - from $62.1 to $86. Average passenger yield (which considers
distance of the flight) increased 47% from 1.7 cents per RPK to 2.5 cents per
RPK.
The increase in ticket prices means that passenger revenues from domestic routes
increased in $ terms despite the low seat load.
Aeroflot's numbers show that available seat kilometres decreased on international
routes in 2000. This reflects the closure of unprofitable international routes
during the year. The increase in domestic routes is reflected in higher ASKs
correspondingly.

Given the increases in fares, on both domestic and international flights and
the higher volumes in 2000, it seems likely that Aeroflot may report revenues
of $938m (from passenger transportation), under Russian Accounting Standards;
an increase of more than 16% on 1999.

Aeroflot expects a 20.7% increase in cargo and mail transportation in 2000,
for the year as a whole. Aeroflot's preliminary results show that Aeroflot carried
2,512 tonnes of mail (32% increase on 1999) and 105,488 tonnes of cargo (20.4%
more than in 1999). Domestic routes are attributed with the greatest cargo and
mail transportation increase by adding revenues of at least $100 m to Aeroflot's
2000 figures.

Aeroflot also reported a reduction in its fuel costs. The carrier's preliminary
results show consumption declined by 1% to 1253 tonnes. The greater use of western
aircraft dramatically reduced jet fuel consumption in grammes per 1 tonne kilometre
by 9%.
