Estonian carrier looks for authorisation for operations out of the UK

CAA audit report awaited (200 words)

Published: 1/18/2001

UK-based cargo carrier, Channel Express is in the process of attempting to lease an An-72 from the Estonian operator, Enimex, for operation out of the UK on ad hoc business. The airline and aircraft underwent a recent inspection by the UK aviation authorities (CAA). They will issue a report at a later date, laying out any concerns about the inspection. The aircraft requires approval by the CAA and the Ministry of Transport before operator and lessee can commence operations based within the EU. According to Tony Carder of Channel Express, the An-72, which will be wet leased, initially, for a period of one year, is one of eight aircraft operated by Enimex. It will compliment the operators existing ad hoc F-27s, as it offers both a rear ramp and greater flexibility in terms of loads. According to the Estonian Aviation Department, if authorisation is given, this will be the first of its type for an Estonian operator. The Department is currently negotiating with the EU to become part of the European Common Aviation Area by 2003. By 2002 it will be able to fly between EU destinations, provided one leg starts or terminates in Estonia.
