Lithuanian Airlines (LAL) has reported that it experienced a 21% increase in passenger volumes in 2000
LAL carried 294,800 passengers last year (up from 244,000 in 1999), according to LAL's International Contracts Group. The company's load factor rose from 44.48% in '99 to 54.51% in 2000. LAL's flights were up by 2%, to 4,285 flights.
Despite the carrier's strong growth in traffic during the year, by October, the airline was reported to be losing money. It has encountered currency problems due to the pegging of the Lithuanian litas to the US dollar, while taking most of its revenues in weakened Euro denominated currencies; a situation compounded by the rises in fuel prices. Slight changes may have gone some way to ameliorating the situation.
