8/21/1998
It is expected that later this month the WSK 'PZL-Mielec' Aviation Factory will initiate the privatisation process. The company, which is one of 31 manufacturing organisations recognised as being strategic for the national economy, has just received permission from the Government to begin the privatisation process. It is expected that initial steps will be taken later this month after privatisation of the whole sector has beencreated. British Aerospace has confirmed its interest to purchase a significant percentage of shares at Mielec, according to Julian Scopes, Vice President for Central Europe. BAe and Mielec have recently signed a contract, under which the Polish company is to undertake production of a number of parts for the BAe Hawk's central fuselage. Mielec will become the sole supplier of those parts and if the Hawk is selected by the Polish Air Force, then it may assembled at Mielec as well as the company carrying out maintenance activities. The current contract is to be signed later this year after necessary negotiations. Its value is estimated to be worth US$15 million a year. (IN898.5) (MM)
