Su-33 crash

A Su-33/Su-27K of the Northern Fleet crashed close to Murmansk on 11th May during a training mission

Published: 5/17/2000

The pilot of the carrier based aircraft, of which 20 are reported to be in service with the Russian Navy, ejected from the aircraft at a height of 2000m according to local media reports, landing 54 km from Severomorsk-3 Air Base on the Kola Peninsula. The pilot, Colonel Pavel Kretov, was recovered by rescue helicopter and, according to the press-service of the Northern Fleet, is reported to be in a satisfactory condition. Failure of the aircraft's control system is being given as the preliminary reason for the crash, but a Ministry of Defence Central Air Safety Inspection team is reported to be investigating.
