Slovak missile disposal

USA fund disposal of SS-23 missiles

Published: 5/15/2000

The USA has paid the Slovak authorities $385,000 to dispose of the country's last six SS-23 missiles. The missiles, deployed in Slovakia after the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, are beyond their service lives which expired in 1998 but the Slovaks did not have the funds to scrap them. The USA therefore provided funds under a memorandum signed by Milan Cereovsky, Chief of the Slovak General Staff, and Douglas Hengel, the Charge d'Affaires at the American Embassy in Bratislava, signed on 27th April.
