Lack of funding prevents engine procurement
Modern aircraft engines with thrust vectoring, which were developed in Russia, are not being installed on military aircraft as the defence ministry cannot afford it, deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Mikhailov, told ConCISe. "We would be glad to equip our aircraft with such engines and to fly them if we had enough money, which we don't have," he added.
In the General's opinion, the use of thrust vectoring engines means a technological revolution in aviation. "They are the engines of the future," Mikhailov said. We plan to fit the engines, which were recently displayed at the International Engines-98 Exhibition in Moscow, on Sukhois and MiGs when sufficient funds are available.
The General also noted that the development of such engines testifies to the great technological potential of the Russian industry. At the same time, "every time we go on from prototypes to series production, which eventually becomes well-known, the technological innovations immediately fall into the hands of foreign specialists. Due to this and their own capability in high technology, the American designers can catch up with the Russian achievements and even to outstrip them."(DF798.1) (VZ)
