Baku takes measures

Baku airport is taking measures to eliminate deficiencies

Published: 5/11/2000

Djangar Askerov, General Director of the state concern Azerbaijan Hava Yollary, has met with representatives of several international airlines to discuss measures to overcome problems at the international Baku Airport. The airlines at the meeting were Turk Hava Yollari, Iran Air, Swissair, Lufthansa, Air Emirates, British Mediterranean, Pakistan International Airlines and KLM. This follows a series of departures from using Baku airport because of claims of corruption and poor service. President Aliyev has been involved in a plan of measures to eliminate deficiencies at the airport. The press service for the airport has reported that airport users have expressed their concerns with the VAT charged for services to foreign airlines at Baku. However, according to the press service, users have welcomed the VAT exemption on fuel, commencing on April 1st, and the withdrawal of pre-payment for fuel. The new agreements will be concluded on a credit basis and the withdrawal of VAT on the rest of the services are expected to be resolved in the near future. JV Ground Handling is also expected to take full delivery of modern equipment and thus be able to provide services meeting international standards.
