Aeroflot Preparing for Time when Sanctions Against Iraq are Lifted

New flights planned

Published: 3/27/2000

According to a report from Interfax, the management of Aeroflot has held talks with an Iraqi airline on the possibility of flying to Iraq once international sanctions against the country are lifted. Apparently, the talks do not constitute a violation of the sanctions, because the flights themselves cannot begin until after they are lifted. Although Aeroflot did not fly regular routes to Iraq prior to the imposition of the sanctions, it sees it as a promising market for the future. In a similar manoeuvre, the company maintained an office in Libya when sanctions were in force against that country and was one of the first to resume flights there once they were lifted.
