Foreign airlines leave Azerbaijan

The Middle Eastern carrier Emitrates is yet another foreign airline stopping flights to Baku.

Published: 3/23/2000

It seems that the departure of foreign airlines from Azerbaijan is gaining momentum with the announcement that the Middle Eastern carrier Emitrates is closing its office and stopping flights from Dubai to Baku. This decision follows on the back of a number of airlines either packing up altogether or severely curtailing their operations to the country. The first airline to discontinue flights to Baku was Austrian Airlines last June, citing lack of profitability. They were quickly followed by Pakistan Airways while, at the same time, KLM reduced its flights to the city from once a day to three times a week due to declining passenger numbers. It is now planning to cease flying to Baku altogether at the end of March 2000, with the main reason being the prohibitively high taxes and rates for landing and handling. KLM regard Baku airport as one of the most expensive they use in their network. The combination of corruption and an arcane operating system, which requires all fees at the airport to be paid in cash, has also led other airlines such as Lufthansa to complain about the difficulty of doing business in what they consider to be an extremely bureaucratic system. As of the end of March, only Crossair, Lufthansa and British Airways (BA) will continue to service the city of Baku, although BA has scaled down its presence by switching to its low cost affiliate British Mediterranean. Despite these protests from foreign carriers, the Azerbaijanis surprisingly continue to appear quite optimistic about traffic growth. Only this month, Azerbaijan Airlines announced its intention to buy four Boeing 737s while its sister ATC organisation Azeraeronavigatsiya anticipating volume growth of 5% in the near term.
