Appeal to ban Tu-134s and Tu-154s from Sheremetyevo

Aircraft noise become issue for local communities

Published: 3/22/2000

Even Russia is beginning to develop a noise abatement lobby. Sergei Krivoshein, Mayor of Lobnya, a town near Sheremetyevo airport, has appealed to the Russian Government and FSVT to restrict the use of Tu-134s and Tu-154s at the airport, due to high noise levels. He also demanded that the airliners use higher climb and decent angles to reduce noise levels in the towns of Lobnya, Dolgoprudny and Pordezkovo, adjacent to the airport. The mayor added that a proportion of the payments the airport makes to the Federal and Moscow City ecology funds should be paid to the Moscow Region. While criticizing the noise, Krivoshein voiced his support for further development of the airport, provided that it created new jobs for Lobnya citizens.
