Bankrupt airport stages revival

Ust-Ilimsk resurrects flights

Published: 3/17/2000

Ust-Ilimsk airport, currently in administration, along with all the regional airlines and the subject of a consolidation programme to create the Regional Corporation of Air Carriers of Irukutsk Oblast, is reported to have been back in operation for the last two months, following the effective cessation of flights at the end of last year. Igor Boldakov, the original architect of the restructuring proposal, has been appointed as General Director of the Airport. Two flights are operating weekly to Irkutsk, and flights have recently been resumed to Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk and Moscow. Current low demand can only justify one flight weekly to these destinations. The flights are being operated by Sibaviatrans (Krasnoyarsk), the transport section of a local metal factory. The airport intends to recover its helicopters and, possibly, to negotiate the lease of aircraft.
