Lufthansa-Sibir cargo agreement

Published: 7/24/1998

An agreement between the Russian airline Sibir (Siberia) and Germany's Lufthansa will enable Siberian firms to send cargoes all over the world. According to a spokesman for Sibir's Moscow office, the agreement will allow cargo deliveries from Siberia, by the Russian airline, to Lufthansa's terminals in Frankfurt and Hannover. They will then be re-loaded onto the German aircraft for transportation, using Lufthansa's worldwide network. In return, the German airline will fly cargoes with Sibir from Frankfurt and Hannover to Novosibirsk, as a transit point for taking them beyond the Urals. Under the agreement, the airlines will co-ordinate cargo transportation tariffs and honour each other's bills of lading. The agreement with one of the world's largest carriers became possible due to Sibir's advanced computerised cargo-processing technology, which also provides information on cargo location at any point in time.(AL798.2) (VZ)
