Mi-28 joins Ka-50 in South Korean competition

Interest growing in Mi-28N as contender for South Korean contract

Published: 3/17/2000

The government of South Korea is reported to have said that it has invited seven helicopter producers to bid for the Korean attack helicopter requirement, a contract worth $1.8 billion, according to the Defence Ministry. Among those invited to tender are the two Russian helicopter producers Kamov and Mil with the Ka-50-2 and the Mi-28N. The latter did not feature as a contender in earlier reports about the contract, but interest in it has apparently been growing following the report, during a visit to China by Deputy Prime Minister Klebanov, that the Mi-28N might be a contender for local production – apparently to the surprise of Mil. The bids for the South Korean contract are required to be in by July 2000 and are for a 'two digit' number of helicopters, to commence delivery in 2004. The final decision is timed for early in 2001 according to reports.
