Helicopter crash in Angola

Another Mi-8 crash

Published: 2/16/2000

On 5th February, an Angolan Mi-8 military helicopter crashed while attempting an emergency landing at an air base at Lubango, Angola, resulting in the deaths of over 30 passengers. Twelve people, including the crew, are reported to have survived. Airport officials in Lubango said that the pilot contacted the control tower, minutes after takeoff, to say he would attempt to land because of technical problems. The helicopter is the reported to have burst into flames on impact, with survivors escaping from the blazing fuselage. The helicopter was significantly overloaded, given its capacity of 30 passengers and crew, but the cause of the crash is unknown and a Ministry of Defence investigation is underway. Local sources report that maintenance on aircraft in the region is poor and a number of crashes have occurred.
