Aeroflot accident

Freighter hits ILS ground equipment

Published: 2/14/2000

On 7th February, an Aeroflot freighter damaged instrument landing systems equipment at Vaernes Airport in Norway. According to reports from the Norwegian Aircraft Accident Investigation Board, the damage inflicted by the Il-76 on the ILS localiser was extensive, ripping three of the elements from the localiser before landing safely. The impact of the damage restricted normal operations at the airport. The Aeroflot aircraft, one of three weekly flights from the airport, was declared airworthy after inspection and left for Moscow carrying forty tonnes of salmon in transit to the Far East. Aeroflot does not have a great record at the Norwegian airport, being reported last year for a near miss between an Il-76 and an SAS flight.
