ISS disputes warmup

NASA say that it may consider US substitue for Russian service module

Published: 2/7/2000

Russia's decision to focus once more on the Mir space station, in favour of the International Space Station (ISS), has prompted a fresh round of criticism from NASA, which has threatened to use a US substitute for the Russian service module, if there are any delays beyond the July/August deadline. The project is already almost two years behind schedule and, according to NASA, Russia's commitment to the project is now questionable. NASA's comments will set the tone for a meeting later this month with the Russian Aviation and Space Agency to review the programme, assess the problems that have caused the delays to the module and to agree a date for putting the component into orbit.
