Stories of upgraded Su-27 in Chechnya conflict

Upgraded Su-27 reported as being 'combat tested' in Chechnya

Published: 1/27/2000

The Russian Air Forces is reported to have been combat-testing an upgraded version of the Su-27 during the Chechnya campaign. The aircraft is possibly the Su27SM, the multi role mid-life update development of the Su-27, given that new engines are mentioned as part of the upgrade and the SM upgrade was originally reported to include a replacement of existing engines with Al-31FM or Al-35F. The tests on the updated aircraft are said to be almost complete. The aircraft has also according to reports, been fitted with new unspecified avionics and a titanium-armoured cockpit. The aircraft is reportedly operating in the mountainous region of southern Chechnya.
