Russian helicopters supplied for destroyers

China matches Russian destroyers with Ka-27 and Ka-28

Published: 1/13/2000

According to military-diplomatic sources, in 2000, Russia will supply China with eight anti-submarine helicopters for two Russian supplied Soveremenney class destroyers 956E. The first left St Petersburg at the end of December 1999 and will be followed by a further ship in 2000. The helicopters, three Ka-27s and five Ka-28s, will be built at Kumertau Plant. Each ship is capable of carrying two helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and in the case of the Ka-27, for both ship and shore based rescue operations. Original reports in early 1998 suggested the order could be for up to twelve Ka-28s.
