The refurbished passenger terminal at Tallinn Airport has been opened although, according to contractor ABB, it will not be fully operational for a couple of months. ABB, in consortium with EMV, handed the airport over to the airport management in November, having started work in August 1998.
The refurbishment, financed in part by the EBRD, France and Norway, has increased the floor area of the airport by 15%, to 14,300 square metres and is designed to handle up to 850 passengers an hour and 1.4m passengers per year. This will be a substantial increase on the 564,000 passengers that passed through the airport last year, making it the busiest of the Baltic States airports. According to the contractors, the airport can be extended if further capacity is required.
