Russia and Kazahkstan in talks

Kazakhstan says it expects Russia to abandon Baikonur by 2005

Published: 12/28/1999

Kazakhstan Space Agency chairman Meirbek Moldabekov has called for an "objective" evaluation of the risks inherent in Russia's continued use of the Baikonur cosmodrome. He rejected calls for the facility's immediate closure, but added that Russia might decide anyway to abandon it, possibly as soon as 2005. Speaking in Almaty on the 14th December Moldabekovsaid that Russia has already paid $50 million in rent for the cosmodrome for 1999. Separately, Kazakhstan Space Agency"s Deputy Chairman Nurlan Utembaev confirmed previous reportsthat Russia has dropped its resistance to expanding Kazakhstan's role in commercial space launches from Baikonur. He said Russia and Kazakhstan would hold talks on that issue next month.
