Ukrainians seek to trade further aircraft

Rumours of additional military aircraft trade for gas

Published: 12/23/1999

It seems that the Ukraine"s trade of gas for Tu-160s was not its last military aviation barter deal, as it steadily downsizes its air force to reflect its current circumstances. Stories are emerging from the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, suggesting that the Ukraine is currently negotiating with Russia for the delivery of MiG-29s in payment for gas debts. The Ukraine is reported to have over a 150 MiG-29s, the current condition of the aircraft is however, unknown. The experience with the Tu-160s would however, suggest that many of the aircraft in inventory will not be in flyable condition.
