Siberian airport company profitable and looking to attract more business
Published:
12/15/1999
OAO Aviation Company Altai (ACA), the Barnaul ground services and airport operating company created out of the restructuring of the Barnaul State Aviation Enterprise is, according to the company, “profitable, solvent and dynamic".
The reasons for its relative success in Siberia, is attributed by the company to extensive refurbishment of the Barnaul Airport, which has included the reconstruction of the runway and lighting and its extension by 350 m along with rebuilding apron and taxiway areas. Additional improvements have also been made in accommodation for crews and ground catering facilities.
ACA believe that these improvements will attract more airlines from the region and consequent improvements in volume. Its assertion of profitability given its investment programme, suggests that its marketing enthusiasm may have got the better of it, given the volume of available traffic and the general condition of other airports in the region. Tolmachyovo Airport in Novosibirsk to the north of Barnaul, reported a 15% fall in passengers in the first nine months of 1999, despite being the base of the growing Siberian carrier, Sibir.
