More details have emerged on the possible cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan on satellite launches. According to Yury Semenov, Chief Designer of RKK Energia, talks have been held with Kasymjomart Tokaev, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, on participation in the new generation Yamal telecommunications satellite project, which does not have Russian state support.
According to Semenov, the project, estimated to cost around $800m, will largely be funded by foreign investors, citing signed agreements with US Space Company, a Swiss company Foros, Russia"s Sovinbank and Gazprombank. If Kazakhstan agrees to participate, its contribution will be in terms of legal and customs support. It can also help with staff training. Almost 1000 RKK employees work in Baikonur.
