Sibir's home airport shows profits

Tolmachevo Airport nine months figures show falling volume, but rising profits

Published: 12/9/1999

Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk has reported an overall decline in both passenger and cargo traffic over the first nine months of 1999, compared to the corresponding period in 1998. Passenger traffic fell by 14.5%, which is mostly attributed to international flights where volume decreased by 32.5%. Cargo traffic fell by 31.1%, to 9,293 tons, with international business accounting for 48.7% of this decline. International routes saw a 25.9% decrease in aircraft handled, with a corresponding decrease of 18.4% on domestic routes. Despite the fall in volume, the airport reported a pre-tax profit of 60m rubles ($2.42m), representing a 110% increase over the first nine months of 1998 (28.5m rubles; $3.12m). Sales increased by 2%, reaching 157.8m rubles, while costs were reduced by 15% to 117,128 rubles. Ownership of the airport has still to be resolved. The tender, in October, of the state"s 51% stake in Tolmachevo Airport, ended in failure. There are rumours that Sibir is keen on gaining control of the airport, although the region itself is reported to be equally interested.
