Mi-8 comes down

Helicopter crash for Kazak operator with loss of five

Published: 11/29/1999

An Mi-8 helicopter is reported to have crashed near Tri Protoki on 19th November. The helicopter, which was leased by Krasnodar Airlines to Kazakh operator, Kazakherest, had refuelled at Astrakhan airport but, following take-off, the flight veered off course and dispatchers were unable to make contact with the crew. According to witnesses, the helicopter, which was carrying three crew and two passengers, fell like a stone and immediately exploded on impact. Fragments were scattered over a 250m-350m radius. An investigation is now underway. The flight “black box" has apparently been found, which may contain clues as to the cause of the crash.
