Poland looks for more temporary bases
|
Published:
4/24/1998
The Polish Air Force is to relocate its bases over the next few years. Due to obvious historical reasons most of the air bases are located in Western and Northern Poland, while there are only two operational airfields in the eastern part of the country, along with three training airfields. The creation of fully-operational airfields with all the necessary infrastructure is impossible, because of the high costs involved and lack of suitable locations. The solution involves building two highway airstrips over the next eight years, located near Tannow and Lomza.
These new airstrips will be 25m wide and over 2km long, and are to be incorporated into the A4 highway, which connects Berlin with Warsaw and Moscow. It is possible that their infrastructure will be combined with that of the roads, including hotels and other facilities which might be used during operational periods. Altogether, Poland has 55 such highway bases. Most of them are located close to the home bases of each regiment. Due to the scaling down of the Polish Air Force in the next few years, this number is to be reduced to about 30, of which three will belong to Naval Aviation and four will be supporting helicopters, belonging to the Army Aviation.
