Noise option for Tu-154 as ICAO deadlines approach

Tupolev due to offer hush kits for Tu-154 to meet ICAO Chapter 3 noise restrictions

Published: 11/11/1999

Given the imminent imposition of restrictions on Russian aircraft due to the ICAO Chapter 3 noise limitations, Tupolev and Aviakor have decided to offer hush kits to meet ICAO standards for the large Tu-154 fleet, in addition to a refurbishment programme for the Tu-154M. The production line in Samara for the Tu-154M continues somewhat sporadically, but it remains in serial production and is according to reports priced in the region of $10m. The reported cost of the 'hushing' of the aircraft is reported to be approximately $1m per aircraft, which appears to be in line with the hush kitting being offered on US Chapter 2 aircraft, which are priced between $1.25 and $1.5m. The timescale for the hush kitting is however, quite tight in Europe at least, as only aircraft operating in Europe before May 2000 that comply with Chapter 3 requirements will be allowed to fly after April 2002. The aircraft meeting the deadline of May 2000 will also have to remain in the registry of the country at the time of the May deadline or will loose its entry rights (www.concise.org 6th May 1999).
