military claims critical underfunding

Russian Air Force after bigger share of 2000 defence budget

Published: 11/8/1999

Anatoly Kornukov, Russian Air Force Commander, has claimed that Russia could lose its combat aviation by 2004 if the Air Force receives less than 25% of the country`s defence spending in 2000. He said that the low level of federal casualties in Chechnya has been largely due to aviation performing over 70% of anti-guerrilla missions. According to Kornukov, foreign air forces receive at least 30% of total defence spending, with the US Air Force getting as much as 35%. By contrast, Russia`s 1999 military budget provided only 11% of defence spending for aviation. Kornukov pointed out that the Air Force has so far received only Rb5 billion ($192m) out of Rb7 billion ($269m) allocated in the present budget.
