India to buy medium bomber

KAPO reported as selling Tu-22 to India and has six ready for export

Published: 9/3/1999

According to local reports, India has resumed talks with Russia on the possible purchase of four Tu-22M ‘Backfire" medium bombers. KAPO, based in Kazan, allegedly ceased manufacturing the aircraft in 1992, after producing 497 aircraft of all variants. It has now been reported as claiming that six aircraft are available for export. The reports designate the aircraft as TU-22MZs. This is a variant unknown to Concise. They may be one of the later variants, such as the Tu-22M-3 or, possibly, the more specialist reconnaissance or electronic warfare aircraft, the Tu-22MR and Tu-22MP. First flown in 1971, the Tu-22M is currently operated by the Ukraine and Russia.
