Il-76 and its crew arrested

Ukrainian aircraft seized in Zambia over suspicion of supplying UNITA rebels

Published: 9/6/1999

On 14th August 1999, the crew of an Il-76 belonging to Ukrainian airline, Azov-Avia, was detained on landing in Lusaka, Zambia. The aircraft was leased to an undisclosed South African company. All nine members of the crew are now being detained in a number of police stations. The official reason given was that pilots' visas had expired. Zambian authorities have so far refused to comment on the situation. According to data in Lusaka airport, the IL-76 was suspected of carrying cargo for UNITA. However, the captain of the crew, Igor Khromov, denied that there was any cargo at all in the aircraft. The official charge is expected to be announced soon.
